Kami

Spatialism

£1500.00

Kami. Carved encaustic on wooden cradled panel.

Kami explores the Shinto concept of animism—the belief that all aspects of nature possess a living spirit—and tracks the delicate boundary between structural order and hidden, shifting presences. Kami are believed to be hidden from this world, and rather than being painted onto the surface, this entity is embedded within the layers and revealed only through careful unveiling. The composition rejects pure abstraction to reveal something the deeper, older parts of the brain recognise as a silhouette of a massive, gentle entity in repose. The viewer is confronted by a heavy, physical presence and a profound, comforting stillness - the quiet warmth of an ancient giant that is obviously present but, like a dream, lacking detail.

The parallel lines carved into the central mass create a rigid partition, acting like window slats or a structural cage. Through these structural punctures, the internal world is revealed: a soft, authentic blend of fleshy pinks and deep charcoals.
