Encaustic & shellac
'Poet' is an abstract exploration of internal light and shifting depth. A central radiant core of intense white and glowing amber bursts through a multi-layered expanse of midnight and cerulean blue. Evoking creative inspiration illuminating a vast subconscious, the composition balances a luminous energy against a moody, deep-sea void as flecks of fiery orange spark beneath the surface like rising thoughts. "This picture always gives me the sense of an entity materialising out of the ether - like something from Shakespeare or Alice In Wonderland," says the artist.
The sgraffito technique is used to carve into the the wax to expose its depths. A shellac burn forces the layers to separate, creating a deeply pitted, cellular texture that catches light dynamically.
