Inspired by 'Spatial Concept: Expectations' by Lucio Fontana.1958-60
Spatialism emerged in the post-WWII atomic age, and specifically from Fontana's Manifesto Blanco in 1946. Fontana officially launched the movement in Milan with the publication of the Primo Manifesto dello Spazialismo (First Manifesto of Spatialism) in 1947. The movement sought to break free from the traditional, two-dimensional constraints of painting and sculpture to integrate art with real space, time, and science.
I continued with that theme and took the concept to a new medium, highlighting that the work is less about the canvas itself and more about the incisions as gateways to something deeper. This physical reveal, and revelation, is the constant across the majority of my encaustic work. The cuts and scores are physical entries into the spaces behind - namely the ideas, concepts and emotions that they represent.
